Learn about Al Khawarizmi, the Father of Algebra, who laid the foundation of modern algebra and transformed scattered concepts into a structured discipline.
By hearing the title, many of you may have understood who we are going to talk about today. Yes, today we will learn about Al Khawarizmi/Khorizomi, the father of Algebra. Who built the pillars of Algebra? Although many mathematicians before him had worked sporadically on algebra, he perfected the subject. So let's know about him.
His full name was Abu Jafar Muhammad Bin Musa Al Khawarizmi. He was one of the famous thinkers of the Middle Ages. However, no clear information is available about his biography. Because he did not write his biography and none of his contemporaries wrote his biography. There is even some controversy about his religious identity.
Various information is available about his year of birth. According to GJ Toomer, Khawarizmi was born before 800 and died after 847. According to some, he was born in 780 and died in 850. However, most historians believe that he was born in 780. There is also much debate about his place of birth. Some think, in Iran or its surroundings.
However, according to some historians, he was born in the Khiba region of Uzbekistan. There are some clues in his name. It is believed that the word 'Khawarizmi' is derived from the word 'Khawarezm'. The term Khawarezm means fish or meat cooked over a wood fire. In ancient times, Khwarezm was a part of the Khiba province of Uzbekistan. However, there is no evidence that Khawarizmi was born in this region.
However, historians agree that his ancestors lived in this province. Now let's talk about his religion. Many may think that he was a follower of Islam just by hearing his name. However, researchers like al-Tabari claim that Khawarizmi was not a follower of Islam. He was a Persian or Zoroastrian. The controversy started from this claim of Al-Tabari. However, contrary to Tabari, Khawarizmi was a Muslim. He was a Muslim, we can get an idea from some of his writings at the beginning of this book.
Such utterances are possible only in the case of a pious devotee. He was a Muslim, no doubt about that.
No information is available about his childhood and education. No information is available about how he got into education, or who was his teacher. But some thought, Khawarizmi Baitul Hikma
He used to study. His popular book on Algebra is Al Jabar wal Muqabala. The word's Algebra and Algorithm are derived from the word 'Al Jabar'. In his book, he discussed the ways to solve various algebraic problems. He was the first to present the systematic solution of quadratic equations. Apart from this, his book also discusses various issues including trade, business transactions, capital and debt, payment of dowry, limitation, and payment of inheritance.
Although many books by ancient Middle Eastern mathematicians are known to be translations or rediscoveries of Indian mathematicians, according to Swiss-American historian Florian Cazori, al-Khawarizmi's algebraic work was distinct from that of Indian mathematicians. In this book of his, nothing was found to be written by reproducing or translating any writings of Indian mathematicians. Another of his most important works was on arithmetic. His writings include Kitab al-Hisab Hindi (Addition and Subtraction of Indian Arithmetic). In his book, he describes the algorithm for decimal numbers (Hindu-Arabic numerals).
Khawarism also played an important role in astronomy. With the help of his own knowledge and the writings of Indian mathematicians, and astronomers, he has presented various information on astronomy in his various books. At the same time, he played an important role in trigonometry and geography.
